Irish Pub Pie is a hearty baked dish layered with savory beef and vegetables beneath creamy mashed potatoes. This comforting pub-style classic is perfect for gatherings or cozy dinners at home.

Ingredients

1 1/2 pounds ground beef
1 tablespoon oil
1 small onion diced
2 carrots diced
2 celery stalks diced
3 cloves garlic minced
2 tablespoons tomato paste
1 cup beef broth
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon fresh thyme leaves
1 cup frozen peas
Salt to taste
Black pepper to taste
2 pounds russet or Yukon Gold potatoes peeled and cubed
4 tablespoons butter
1/2 cup warm milk
1/2 cup shredded sharp cheddar optional

Instructions

  • Boil potatoes in salted water for 15 to 20 minutes until tender. Drain.

  • Sauté onion, carrots, and celery in oil for 5 minutes. Add garlic and cook briefly.

  • Add ground beef and cook until browned. Drain excess fat.

  • Stir in tomato paste and cook 1 to 2 minutes.

  • Add broth, Worcestershire sauce, and thyme. Simmer 8 to 10 minutes until thickened.

  • Stir in peas and season with salt and pepper.

  • Mash potatoes with butter and warm milk. Season to taste and mix in cheese if using.

  • Spread beef mixture in a baking dish and top with mashed potatoes.

  • Bake at 400°F for 20 to 25 minutes until golden and bubbling.

Notes

Simmer filling until thick before baking.
Create texture on potato topping for better browning.
