1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
2 large eggs
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup heavy cream
1/2 cup unsalted butter (for caramel)
1 cup granulated sugar (for caramel)
1 teaspoon vanilla extract (for caramel)
Flaky sea salt for sprinkling
Optional: 1/2 cup chopped pecans or chocolate chips

Instructions

  • reheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a 9×13-inch baking pan with parchment paper.
  • Cream 1 cup butter with 1 cup granulated sugar and 1/2 cup brown sugar until light and fluffy.
  • Beat in eggs one at a time, then stir in 2 teaspoons vanilla extract.
  • Whisk flour, baking soda, and 1/2 teaspoon salt; fold into wet mixture.
  • Spread dough into prepared pan and bake 20–25 minutes until lightly golden.
  • For caramel, melt 1/2 cup butter, stir in 1 cup sugar until golden, slowly add 1 cup heavy cream, stir in 1 teaspoon vanilla.
  • Pour caramel over baked base, sprinkle sea salt, and optional nuts or chocolate.
  • Chill 1–2 hours before slicing.
