Soft, chewy cookies with a buttery base, lightly sweetened and optionally enhanced with chocolate or nuts.

Ingredients

1 cup unsalted butter, softened
1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
1/4 cup granulated sugar
1 large egg
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
Optional: 1 cup chocolate chips, nuts, or cinnamon sugar

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  • Cream butter and sugars until light and fluffy. Add egg and vanilla; mix until smooth.
  • Whisk flour, baking soda, and salt; fold into wet ingredients until combined.
  • Fold in optional chocolate chips, nuts, or spices.
  • Scoop dough onto baking sheets, 2 inches apart, and flatten slightly.
  • Bake 10–12 minutes until edges are lightly golden.
  • Cool 5 minutes on sheet, then transfer to wire rack.

Notes

Chill dough for thicker cookies; add chocolate, nuts, or spices for variations.
